Virtual Common Rooms (VCRs) are online spaces led and owned by students 鈥� similar to the environment of a 鈥榬eal鈥� common room 鈥� a place for you to get to know other students and socialise with them.

Virtual Common Rooms (VCRs) are student online spaces, that are run in collaboration with and programmed by staff . Similar to the environment of a 鈥榬eal鈥� common room, VCRs can provide an online space for students to make connections and to work, collaborate or relax. 听

香港六合彩 introduced VCRs in 2020 to help you make connections with fellow students, your department, your programme of study and wider 香港六合彩. VCR鈥檚 are 听not limited by physical constraints allowing students to utilise them 24 hours a day, seven days a week .

If you department has a VCR, you will automatically be added to it by the start of term. You may find that you are in one or more VCRs, depending on the structure of your department, so that you can interact with different groups of students.

If you are taking modules in another department, or you are on a combined-studies degree, and you want to join a VCR in another department please contact the Teaching Administration team in that department.

If your department doesn鈥檛 yet have a VCR, you can speak with your Teaching Administration team or your Academic Representatives 鈥� the VCR project team can then help them set something up.

Please note, this guidance assumes that your department has chosen to set up VCRs. If your department doesn鈥檛 yet have a VCR, you can speak with your Teaching Administration team or your Academic听Representatives.

Introduction

VCRs have been created in consultation with students and the Students鈥� Union 香港六合彩, to provide new and returning students with a virtual social space to network, connect and build communities with other students in your department (and beyond).听听

VCRs are student spaces that are run in collaboration with and programmed by听members of听staff.听Students can help听within VCRs听by volunteering听to become a student volunteer, these positions听may be taken up by Academic Reps, Transition Mentors or other students in your department interested in creating the social connections vital for succeeding as a learner.听 听

How do VCRs work?

The VCRs have been created via the Microsoft Teams platform, with different channels for different activities:听

• Noticeboard听- a place to see notices about important information, events, jobs听etc听similar to听a noticeboard in a physical common room.听
• Introductions听- students are encouraged to introduce themselves and share information about themselves and their interests. These introductions can be referred to over time, especially if new members join the VCR.听
• Chat听- the main space for general discussion (both live and in your own time).听
• Cafe听- a space dedicated to hosting meetings and events, with听ability听to set up ad hoc, scheduled or drop-in style events.听 Guests can be invited to specific events too.听

Please note, these channels titles are default titles. Your VCR听staff leaders听may also change and add to them to suit your department.听

You will be added to one or more VCRs based on the structure in your department 鈥� this may be by degree听programme, study type or other social grouping as appropriate.听

What will your student volunteers do on VCRs?

Students in your department have volunteered to听help out听with the running听of the VCR, so that they can be听run in collaboration with staff.听Student volunteers听will:听

• Work with your department to听finalise听the structure of your VCR.听
• Set up some ad-hoc, regular or drop in events. Your department may have initially set up some induction week/welcome events.听听
• Promote and encourage use of the VCR.听
• Publicise听things on the noticeboard, such as other events, activities, tasks, jobs or interesting news items.听
• If your department does not use听Unitu听they may have created a feedback channel in your VCR so that you can give feedback to your Academic Reps to raise at meetings of your Staff-Student Consultative Committees (SSCCs) as well as outside of these meetings.听

What to do if you are concerned about behaviour in the VCR

The VCR is an informal space. Like a physical common room, it is part of by 香港六合彩 for use by students. Also like a physical common room, there needs to be some expectations听and听rules to make sure the common space is respected and respectful.听

As on campus,听behaviour听in virtual common rooms and other online spaces is covered by the听香港六合彩 Code of Conduct听and related policies such as the听.听

In particular, it鈥檚听important for students to remember that any activity engaged in 鈥溾��using the internet, including virtual learning environments (e.g.听Moodle), social networking sites (e.g.听Facebook, Twitter etc.), blogs or other web resources, refrains from causing offence and could not be regarded as bullying or harassment.鈥� (Section 1 of the 香港六合彩 Code of Conduct)听
