Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering academics in Academic Promotions list for 2021–22

We are delighted to announce that seven academics from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering have received promotions as part of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s list of Senior Academic, Research and Teaching promotions for 2021–22.

Congratulations to all seven of our academics named in Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s Academic Promotions list for 2021–22. Their promotions are effective from 1 October 2022.

List of promotions

Dr Jie Huang is promoted to Professor of Biomaterials

Jie Huang
Jie Huang joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering as a lecturer in 2006 from the University of Cambridge, where she was a senior research associate at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Her research covers in vitro and in vivo biological evaluations of bioactive glass, novel substituted hydroxyapatite, biocomposites and nanocomposites.

Dr Mehran Moazen is promoted to Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Mehran Moazen
Mehran Moazen’s research interests are focused on the biomechanics of bones and joints and to understanding the underlying mechanisms of their growth and repair. In June 2012, Dr Moazen received a prestigious five-year research fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering to investigate the biomechanics of craniosynostosis. He joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering in July 2015.

Dr PJ Tan is promoted to Professor of Applied Mechanics

PJ Tan
Dr Tan's research deals with the structural and functional characterisation of engineering materials and structures across a broad range of scales. He joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê in September 2007 and leads an active research group at the High Strain Rate Laboratory, where he works in various aspects of materials modelling and dynamic structural mechanics.

Dr Helge Wurdemann is promoted to Professor of Robotics

Helge Wurdemann
Helge Wurdemann joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering in 2016 and is among the core roboticists at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, with a focus on developing innovative robotic hardware. He currently leads the Soft Haptics & Robotics Lab, a multi-disciplinary team of over 15 researchers bringing together haptics and soft robotics.

Dr Ali Abolfathi is promoted to Associate Professor (Teaching)

Ali Abolfathi
Ali Abolfathi’s research covers a range of topics on structural dynamics and nonlinear vibrations, including flying insects, nonlinearity in built-up structures and vehicle suspension. In 2014 he moved from Strathclyde University to Loughborough University, where he collaborated with Jaguar Land Rover on research. He joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering in 2016.

Dr Will Newton is promoted to Associate Professor (Teaching)

Will Newton
Will Newton has an interest in energy efficient and sustainable technologies and design, and has spent his academic career working with industrial problems. Dr Newton’s main expertise is in computational modelling and experimentation of heat transfer, with experience also in additive layer manufacturing. He joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê in 2017.

Dr Thomas Peach is promoted to Associate Professor (Teaching)

Thomas Peach
Thomas Peach’s research interests lie in medical device development, in particular in the design of minimally invasive treatments for aneurysms and diseases of the cardiovascular system. In addition to working with colleagues in the UK, he has collaborations in the USA, Canada, Germany, South Africa, and China.
