Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Arena for PGTAs

For postgraduate teaching assistants (PGTAs) only.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Arena for PGTAsÌýis a development pathway for postgraduate students who teach (usually called PGTAs) at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, leading (optionally) to the submission of an application to become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

There are three steps in this developmental pathway:

  1. Gateway workshop - mandatory for all PGTAs
  2. The Teaching Associate Programme (TAP) - optional ( limited spaces available - must have at least 10 hours of teaching/supporting learning experience)ÌýÌý
  3. Application for HEA Fellowship - optional
As researchers who teach, PGTAs can make a unique contribution to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s mission to develop excellence in research-based education. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Arena for PGTAsÌýis designed for you as a postgraduate researcher with teaching and/or assessment responsibilities.

The programme will enable you to think creatively about teaching, learning, and assessment in your discipline. You will also have the opportunity to meet colleagues from different disciplines and to plan practical approaches to helping students learn.

How to register

Step one: Gateway workshop

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Arena for PGTAsÌýbegins with anÌýintroductory Gateway workshop, designed to prepare you for your teaching responsibilities and introduce you to approaches to teaching and learning.

Session formatÌý

  • Online: 2.5 hoursÌýsynchronous session plusÌýpreparation activities
  • On campus: 2.5 hours workshop plus preparation activities

Step two: the Teaching Associate Programme (TAP)Ìý

Once you have completed a Gateway session (or equivalent), you then have the opportunity to join the second stage of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Arena for PGTAs: theÌýTeaching Associate Programme.

Session format

This is a 5-session course (2hour xÌý5 sessions). The course will be offered either as in an in-person and online format, which you may select depending on your preferences and availability.

In addition to the live sessions, the course will require the completion of a set of core asynchronous preparation activities, which will take between 1 to 2 hours per session.

Optional additional activities/resources that participants may access and complete in their own time are also suggested.

The course is hands-on and highly interactive and participants have the opportunity to tailor the content to their needs and teaching contexts. Find out more about TAP.Ìý
