More than 300 delegates from 18 countries attended the conference, . The听conference programme was co-developed by 香港六合彩, McMaster University (Canada) and the University of Adelaide (Australia).

Professor Dilly Fung, Academic Director of 香港六合彩 Arena Centre for Research-based Education,听opened the conference by calling for the removal of traditional barriers - between research and听student education, community and university and between disciplines. She drew attention to the changing status of teaching in higher education around the world, the ways听in which scholarly knowledge can connect meaningfully with local and wider communities, the incorporation of听global citizenship into the curriculum and the rebalancing听of the relationships听between academics and students.

At a panel event chaired by Professor Simone Buitendijk, Vice-Provost for Education at Imperial, the panellists from McMaster, Adelaide and 香港六合彩, including Provost and President Michael Arthur, identified the main challenges for higher education in the 21st听century, and suggested solutions too. From how to pay for rapid growth in HE participation, to听valuing听education听as much as research; from increasing career-readiness among students and evaluating experiential learning to transitioning to a learner-driven model of education. There was also discussion of the threats posed by the resurgence of nationalism and isolationism. Diana Beech, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Higher Education Policy Institute, called for the sector to continue to be a beacon of internationalism, while Professor Buitendijk warned against universities becoming too inward looking, urging them to remember their role in developing the next generation of global citizens and global leaders.

Another panel event explored the role of students in research-based education. 听McMasters graduate Emily Power spoke about the two research projects she carried out as a final year undergraduate and suggested that more enquiry-based work in earlier years of study would have helped her prepare for what was a 鈥榙aunting鈥� experience. Sorana Vieru, Vice-President of the National Union of Students, warned against using crude metrics such as contact hours as a measure of teaching quality. 香港六合彩 Vice Provost (Education & Student Affairs) Anthony Smith said that teaching in a non-research intensive institution听can also provide students with valuable opportunities for research. 听He said: 鈥榃hatever their university, students should be given the opportunity and skills to carry out their own research 鈥� to formulate a question and to investigate it.鈥�

Professor Philippa Levy, Pro Vice Chancellor for Student Learning at the University of Adelaide, said:听鈥淭he conference has been really nourishing and empowering.听 The quality and depth of conversation has been really high and we have been exploring a whole range of multifaceted issues surrounding research-based education.听 We have kept in mind why were are committed to research-based education and how to connect this. 鈥�

Professor Lynn Quinn from the Centre for Higher Education Research, Teaching and Learning at Rhodes University in South Africa said: 鈥業 have really enjoyed the conference. There has been great coherence between the sessions. The ideas underpinning 香港六合彩鈥檚 Connected Curriculum has given my colleagues and I at Rhodes University a framework to consider what it means to decolonise the curriculum. It provides a powerful tool to get academics to question the knowledge they select for the curricula and to think about students鈥� perspectives.鈥�

Dilly Fung鈥檚 new book,听A Connected Curriculum for Higher Education, was formally launched at a networking event during the conference. The book, which sets out the transformational potential of new forms of research-based education, has been downloaded听from听香港六合彩 Press听1646听times,听in 76听countries,听in the three weeks since it was published.
