2024 Sustainability Awards: Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê celebrates another year of sustainability progress!

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê commemorated its 12th Annual Sustainability Awards Ceremony on the 24th of July, celebrating the sustainability accomplishments of 59 Green Impact teams, 155 LEAF teams and 15 Special Awards recipients.

Celebrating our community

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s Sustainability Awards Ceremony witnessed over 200 staff and students from all corners of the university join together, both online, and in person, to celebrate the unwavering dedication and hard work of our community members who have been striving to enhance the sustainability of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.

This year has seen fantastic progress in all areas of sustainability. As our team have progressed work on the new Sustainability Plan to extend our strategy first set in 2019, fantastic efforts by staff and students have continued to help us move towards our goals. The incredible efforts by teams and individuals of staff and students show that sustainability is being embedded across all areas of our university – there’s plenty more work to be done, but we can look back with pride at our achievements over the last year." The Ceremony, hosted by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê’s Assistant Sustainability Director, Jason Clarke, celebrated an amazing 155 LEAF teams making their laboratories more sustainable, and 59 Green Impact teams working towards improving the sustainability of their offices and libraries. This year, we had 100 teams receive Gold Awards - more than ever before!

There were also five Special Sustainability Awards. These Special Awards were given to nominated individuals and teams who have shown to go the extra mile to achieve greater levels of sustainability in teaching, research, and operations at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and beyond. Guest speakers

Attendees heard from a range of speakers from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and beyond:  

  • Jason Clarke, Assistant Sustainability Director;
  • Prof. Mark Maslin, Professor of Earth System Science and Pro-Vice Provost for the Grand Challenge of the Climate Crisis;
  • Goksu Danaci, the newly-elected President of the Students' Union Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê;
  • Dr Cathy Elliot, Associate Professor (Teaching) and Vice Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences;
  • Kathryn Brown OBE, Director of Climate Change and Evidence, The Wildlife Trusts.

The awards

All winners were celebrated and given delicious cakes to celebrate their achievements. Award winners were able to have a photo with our new award trophies, made from reclaimed scaffolding wood by Elvisse & Kresse, who make luxury goods from rescued materials. The cakes were baked by Luminary Bakery, a social enterprise providing training, employment, and community to women in need.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê in numbers

The fantastic accomplishments across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê add to a positive year for sustainability at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. In 2023/2024:  

  • Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê retained its First-Class award in the People and Planet University League.
  • 20 academics represented Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê in the international climate negotiations at COP28, and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê sent a student representative, Mary McHarg, the President of the Student’s Union,to a COP for the first time. 
  • The Marshgate building was completed and opened and we launched the pedestrianisation and greening of Gordon Street.
  • Sustainable Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and the Students' Union Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê co-delivered the inaugural Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Sustainability Leadership Conference, an extra-curricular opportunity for students of any course, providing 2 days of talks and workshops from 80 exceptional speakers from the world of sustainability. 
  • 28 Days of Sustainability returned, providing a full month of exciting sustainability events organised by staff and students.
  • An Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Toolkit was launched to support academic staff to embed sustainability within their curriculum.
  • More than 600 staff and students pledged to switch off during the Christmas and Easter periods, helping Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê to reduce 148 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to planting 2,467 trees and saving Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê over £215,340.
  • Sustainable Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Accomodation, and the Students' Union Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê collaborated to launch Hazaar, the sustainable student marketplace, at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.
  • All Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê East buildings achieved BREEAM Excellent status.

    2024 Winners of the Sustainability Special Awards

    Staff Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability

    The winner of the 2024 Staff Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability is Prof. Andrea Sella, Professor of Chemistry in the Chemistry Department.  

    Andrea is dedicated to cutting down water and electricity usage, analysing and collecting data on how to reduce waste. You’ll often find him in the basement with Estates staff, replacing faulty components and making our campus greener, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to sustainability.  


    The highly commended nominations for the Staff Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability were Dr Kate Roach, Associate Professor and Chair of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Steering Group, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, ²¹²Ô»åÌýMina Vasalou, Ross Purves, and Andrea Gauthier, Digital Design Thinking and Making (DDTM), Culture, Communication and Media – IOE.

    Student Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability

    The winner of the 2024 Student Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability is Hannah Simon, BSc Architecture, The Bartlett School of Architecture.  

    Hannah Simon, the 2023-24 BSA Student Society President, is the driving force behind BSA’s sustainability initiatives. Working with staff across the school, she founded the "Founders Keepers" initiative, reducing material waste and supporting students with free resources! 


    The highly commended nomination for the Student Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sustainability were Batool Wajiha Zaidi, Arts and Sciences BASc, Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education / Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Sign Language Society, ²¹²Ô»åÌýAnoushka Jain, BSc Politics & International Relations, Department of Political Science.    

    Sustainability Research Award

    The winner of the Sustainability Research Award is Dr Isabela Butnar, Principle Research Fellow, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute for Sustainable Resources, Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources.

    With her expertise in environmental modelling, Isabela co-developed a carbon calculator for scope 3 emissions in Cambridgeshire's waste sector. Launched in January 2023, this free tool, now has been embraced by 60 local authorities. Her innovative work is making waves in climate change mitigation.


    The highly commended nominations for Sustainability Research Award were ¶Ù°ùÌýSimon Chin-Yee, Lecturer in Development Studies, Department of Political Science & School of Public Policy, and ¶Ù°ùÌýLakshmi Priya Rajendran, Lecturer in Environmental and Social Equity, Bartlett School of Architecture.

    Sustainability Education Award

    The winner of the Sustainability Education Award is the IOE's Primary PGCE Specialism Team, Institute of Education. 

    The team partnered with the Royal Horicultural Society, integrating sustainability into initial teacher education through school gardening, reaching 300 schools and 200 student teachers, deepening their understanding of climate change and sustainable education. 


    The highly commended nominations for the Sustainability Research Award were awarded to the Business & Sustainability MSc team (Dr Samuel Tang, Dr Stuti Rawat, Paola Bertelli), BSEER ²¹²Ô»åÌýGiulia Pellizzari, Lecturer & Education Lead, Cancer Institute.

    Sustainability Impact Award

    The winner of the Sustainability Impact Award is Gather & Gather, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's catering contractor, collected by Charlotte Thwaite, Sustainability Manager..   

    Gather and Gather has been leading the way in sustainability at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, through:  

    • Reducing meat portions, saving 25,699kg of greenhouse gases
    • Banned the sale of any recipes with the highest carbon rating  
    • Partnered with ReeWild, encouraging more climate conscious eating 

    The highly commended nominations for the Sustainability Impact Award were awarded to the MechSpace Team, Mechanical Engineering, and Mary McHarg, Students’ Union Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê President.
