The inaugural lecture of Arthur Petersen,ÌýProfessor of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê STEaPP.

Professor Petersen's career spans over 16 years at the interface of science knowledge and policy-making. From planned adaptive regulation of flood control in the Netherlands to explorations of uncertainty in Southeast Asian delta communities, his work deals with climate change, sustainable development and the risks of emerging technology.

In his inaugural lecture, Professor Petersen will trace the relationship between university and government, from the birth of science advice to the present day. Positioning the university as a platform for independent thinking and partisan perspectives, he will explore its role in public decision-making around science, technology and engineering.

Drawing on examples from across his career, Professor Petersen will address the intrinsic tensions between politics, religion, policy-making, science and technology. Looking to the future, he will offer a pragmatic way forward for the complex relationship between these practices, and highlight responsible strategies for regaining trust under allegedly 'post-truth' conditions.
