Sam Johnson is studying History, Politics and Economics BA at SSEES. He tells us how his studies are going so far and why he chose to study this particular programme.

Why did you choose to study at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê SSEES?

The SSEES region was rarely discussed in my prior studies so studying here felt like a good place to learn something new. Beyond that, when applying in 2022, the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian war made me acutely aware of the importance of the region.

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?

I’m studying BA History, Politics, and Economics (HPE). When applying to courses I was looking for opportunities to study a range of subjects so this course was a natural fit. This is because I felt it would be more rewarding to learn about various disciplines and specialise as my interests evolve, rather than spend years focusing on one discipline. I was surprised at how uncommon HPE programmes or similar programmes covering 3 disciplines were when researching but I am very glad I found the SSEES HPE course as it has been great so far.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?

I’ve really enjoyed my course so far and feel I have made good progress. The teaching has been excellent, most of the readings are interesting, and I have been able to manage the workload. For 2nd year, I’m following the history and politics track of my degree which I am really looking forward to. The Frontiers of History module was definitely a highlight of my 1st year as it introduced new approaches to studying history.

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?

The academic staff at SSEES are excellent. The quality of lectures in particular surpassed my expectations. Furthermore, the academic staff are all very approachable and able to provide great support.

What are the facilities like at SSEES and the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê campus generally?

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê has great facilities. One small thing I really appreciate is water refill points set up around campus. The various libraries around campus make for great study locations, with each one having a unique atmosphere. The basement of SSEES library is my personal favourite study spot. Additionally, the Masaryk common room is a great social study spot.

What about the social life?

There is a large quantity of societies/sports clubs/etc at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, which did make choosing a few to involve myself with a difficult decision. There are also multiple events hosted by SSEES and other departments across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê which often end with a social element.

How would you describe your fellow students?

Nice people. I get on well with most of my classmates and have made friends. It's also nice to study with a diverse range of people and personalities who can all lend different experiences to conversations.

Where do you hope your degree will take you after graduation?

Honestly, I don’t know what I want to do after graduation. However, I am confident that this degree will equip me with knowledge that will be useful for whatever I decide to do.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?

Personally, I would recommend looking at gaining some familiarity with the basics of the SSEES region for History, Politics, and Economics since the course is centred around the region so having a small amount of prior knowledge will help you keep up, and also look good on a personal statement.
