Overview
This one-day online course will help youÌýmakeÌýaudiovisual material accessible to D/deaf and hard of hearing people through subtitles.
You'll learn aboutÌýthe needs of D/deaf and hard of hearing people, including children, and develop skills forÌýsubtitling pre-recorded materialÌýfor this audience.Ìý
You'll also be introduced to captioning puppet theatre.
This course is run by CenTraS - Centre for Translation Studies at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.

Course content
Topics covered will include:
- Who is our audience? Understanding deafness
- Linguistic and technical aspects of subtitling: spotting, line-breaks, editing and reading speed
- SDH specific elements: music, sound effects, paralinguistic features, speakers’ identification
- Legislation and guidelines, present SDH and captioning panorama
- How to make an event accessible to D/deaf and hard of hearing people: the case of captioning puppet theatre

Soledad is a Teaching Fellow at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê,ÌýteachingÌýsubtitling for D/deaf and hard of hearing people. Her main area of research isÌýsubtitling for deaf children. SheÌýalso runs aÌýcaptioning service at the Puppet Theatre Barge (London).ÌýFor more information see .
