PhD title and abstract
The role of trust in managing outsourced public services
Alice’s doctoral research examines the role of trust in the delivery of outsourced public services. She investigates how more flexible contractual arrangements, based on trust and collaborative processes, are being used to manage the risk and uncertainty involved in outsourcing public services that are difficult to define and measure. Her research combines qualitative and experimental methods to trace the process by which trust between governments and their suppliers can contribute to better service performance and to explore the unintended consequences of using interpersonal relationships to manage risk in public contracts.
Research interests
Alice is interested in the politics and practice of public sector organization design, particularly decisions about the boundaries between the public and private sectors and questions of public ownership. She is interested in the ways in which public management decisions can have wide-ranging consequences for people’s experience of government and the effects of public management reforms on the quality and responsiveness of public services.
