Spotlight on... Adwoa Darko

3 October 2024

This week, Adj from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team tells us about the forthcoming Religion and Belief Equality Action Plan, as well as her childhood love, her literary love, and her favourite film which... she quite likes, actually!

What is your role and what does it involve?

Hi! I’m Adj, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (Behaviour and Culture Change). My work focuses on fostering an inclusive and psychologically safe environment that is welcoming and celebrates the diversity of our community. Key to this is facilitating an infrastructure for challenging bullying, harassment, sexual misconduct and other harmful behaviours whilst also building our community’s knowledge, confidence and leadership on EDI.

How long have you been at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and what was your previous role?

I have just celebrated my one-year anniversary at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê! I was previously the Inclusive Communities Manager at London Metropolitan University.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

I just graduated from my MA in International Higher Education Management at the University of Bath. I was studying part time and working full time –Ìýit made me realise the stressful balancing act so many of our students continue to perform.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list

One exciting project I am working on right now is the Religion and Belief Equality Working Group to establish a Religion and Belief Equality Action Plan at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. We have completed an audit of our current provision, identified gaps and reviewed best practice in the sector. Over the next few months, we shall be conducting listening exercises with staff and students to further establish how we can better meet needs in this space. Ìý

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

If I am cheating, my favourite album is Luther Vandross’ Greatest Hits. But if I am not allowed to choose a compilation album, I would say The Emancipation of MimiÌýby Mariah Carey.

Favourite film, for my sins, is Love Actually. Every time someone tries to tell me how awful it is, I put my fingers in my ears and run away.

Favourite novel is difficult! I am going to say Small IslandÌýby Andrea Levy. We owe so much to the Windrush Generation.

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

I would say I am more of a meme person. Any meme featuring Nene Leakes from Real Housewives of Atlanta has me sobbing with laughter. I quote her on a daily basis.

Who would be your dream dinner guests?

Emma Thompson, Angela Davis, Stella Dadzie, Alison Hammond, Jacqueline Wilson, Shonda Rhimes, Gemma Collins, Kimberle Crenshaw and my mum. Lionel Richie, Usher and Hannah Montana will perform in between the courses. Selasi from The Great British Bake Off will be the chef.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Don’t ever apologise for taking up space. And sorry, you don’t end up married to Gareth Gates.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I love Shakespeare. My favourite play is Much Ado About Nothing – I can recite many scenes by heart. I used to DJ as a student and hoping to start that up again as a hobby.

What is your favourite place?

Milton Keynes. If you ever want someone to deliver an impassioned monologue to you for an hour, ask me about Milton Keynes.
