Pro-Vice-Provost (Alumni): applications now open

7 February 2018

Philanthropy at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê is about more than raising funds to support projects - it is about breaking down barriers, providing opportunities, and supporting the University to challenge convention, think differently and solve global challenges.

Quad lit

In September 2016, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê launched a bold new global philanthropic 'It's All Academic' Campaign with the goal of raising £600million. At its heart is the radical, disruptive thinking that has been at the core of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê since our founding in 1826. Just over a year on from the public launch of the Campaign we are delighted to have passed the £350million milestone and we are making similarly impressive progress against our targets for alumni engagement. We depend on our alumni, supporters and colleagues to reach our full Campaign goals and our approach to engaging people is forward-thinking and collaborative, it's unique, just like Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's culture.

Our alumni engagement activity is focused on four priority audiences to align with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's strategic priorities. These target groups are: current students and recent graduates; London-based alumni; alumni based in our priority global locations; and rising star alumni and supporters with influence. Focus on these audiences will allow us to maximise the support we secure for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê 2034 objectives.

In order to strengthen the delivery of the alumni relations objectives of It's All Academic: The Campaign for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, is appointing a Pro-Vice-Provost (Alumni).

The Pro-Vice-Provost (Alumni) will play an important strategic role as an ambassador for the Campaign, connecting with priority alumni audiences and engaging alumni and supporters in lifelong and mutually beneficial relationships with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.

Applications from senior staff

We are seeking applications from senior Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê academic staff, at the level of Professor or Reader, who can work in an ambassadorial capacity representing the whole of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and providing support to the leadership team in OVPD. We would particularly like to encourage women, and men or women from an ethnic minority, to apply, as they are under-represented within Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê at senior level.

These roles will suit those who have existing experience of, or interest in, communicating with and engaging groups of alumni. Experience of playing an active part in philanthropic relationships would also be an advantage.

Duties and responsibilities

The primary responsibility for Pro-Vice-Provost (Alumni) will be to:

  • Act as an ambassador for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê with its global alumni and supporter community. Bring to life the current work and strategic objectives of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, and It's All Academic: The Campaign for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, with passion and authority.
  • Interact and engage with alumni, working with both established groups and individual volunteers, and reconnecting with alumni who do not have a current active relationship with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.
  • Be an advocate for both the alumni engagement and fundraising objectives of It's All Academic to colleagues across the institution. Act as an effective conduit between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's academic community and the Office of the Vice-Provost (Development).
  • Work closely with colleagues from the Office of the Vice-Provost (Development), play an active role in moving forward relationships with prospective donors and in engaging both academics and alumni as catalysts in these relationships.
  • Contribute to the development of alumni relations plans including the establishment of an alumni advocacy programme to help support key Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê 2034 themes.
  • Attend and speak at Campaign events both in the UK and in priority cities internationally.
  • Serve on appointment panels for Office of the Vice-Provost (Development).
  • Be an active member of Internal Campaign Steering Group, chaired by the Provost, including attending termly meetings.

There is no FTE percentage specified for this role. It will be up to the successful applicant and their Dean to decide how much time can reasonably be devoted to the role, given other commitments. The role will not attract an honorarium. Travel and other expenses incurred in the delivery of this role will be covered.

Applications should be in the form of a letter, together with a short CV, to Lori Houlihan by email to lori.houlihan@ucl.ac.uk by 12 noon on Friday 23 February 2018. If required, short interviews will be held in March.

The decision on appointment to this role will be made by the Provost and the Vice-Provost (Development) for 3 years in the first instance.
