5 June 2013
Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology has installed a monolith in Gordon Square to celebrate 75 years of leading global archaeology.
The sarsen stone, which was donated by a farmer in the Avebury area of Wiltshire, is instantly recognisable as an archaeological icon due to their presence at sites such as Stonehenge.
Professor Andrew Reynolds (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology), coordinator of the 75th anniversary programme, said: "This distinctive new landmark will provide a connection between the public and the activities of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology, which has occupied the north side of the Square for 55 years.
"Erecting a standing stone will enhance the environment of Gordon Square in a visually pleasing way using natural materials, which will blend in with the green setting of the Square."
