Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Language and Study Skills Summer School
30 April 2012
Following the introduction of a foreign language requirement for UK students applying to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê, a Language and Study Skills Summer School will be launched this year as an alternative for pupils from years 12 and 13 who do not meet the criteria.
Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê believes that knowledge of a modern foreign language and the possession of intercultural skills are an integral part of a 21st century education. Students can meet this requirement on entry by offering a GCSE or equivalent in a foreign language at Grade C or above.Ìý
However, students who do not meet this requirement will not be disadvantaged in the application process. They will be able to meet the requirement in one of three ways:
- taking a language course as part of their degree
- studying for a language certificate at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's Language Centre
- attending the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Language and Study Skills Summer School.
The summer school is residential and will take place from 8 July to 21 July 2012. Students will take part in language lessons each morning, self-study and key skills sessions will also take place in the afternoons, with a focus on transition to university study and raising academic achievement. In the evening and at weekends there will be a full programme of social activities.
"The summer school is intended to offer additional support to students from under-represented backgrounds to learn a language. It will also seek to raise the attainment of its participants through intensive study skills session that will help prepare students for their studies at University."
