The idea of the fund is to stimulate students to come forward with novel and exciting project ideas that apply Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's research to global problems. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊU's Volunteering Services Unit will be administering the fund, and will also provide advice and support for students.

The types of projects that will be considered include those that explore sustainable approaches to urban living, create opportunities for people to share their cultures, or that turn student research into policy materials for NGOs, local authorities or central Government.

Ian Scott (Principal Facilitator, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Grand Challenges) explained: "Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê students have an unrivalled reputation for volunteering and social entrepreneurship. The Grand Challenges team is really keen to work with them through support of projects designed both to benefit communities and to provide a better understanding of the key research issues at the root of contemporary societal challenges."

John Braime (Volunteering Manager at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊU) commented: "This is a new initiative and we're keen to hear about students' ideas. We're really looking forwards to getting some exciting new projects."

Grants of up to £750 are on offer. Students should read the guidance notes, complete the application form and email to John Braime. Applicants will be invited to present their project idea to the VSU Small Grants Panel.
