5 September 2011

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê is launching a new undergraduate degree, the Bachelor in Arts and Sciences (BASc), to reflect a growing demand from both students and employers for interdisciplinary degree programmes.

Course Director Carl Gombrich explained: "Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's Arts and Sciences degree isÌýunlike any other degree in the UK.ÌýIt allows students to create a bespokeÌýprogramme, incorporating both arts andÌýsciences. This is a brand new course designed to provide breadth and depth, with students able to fashion their own degrees in a combination of humanities / social sciences and sciences / engineering. Graduates will be well-equipped for work in a wide range of sectors of the global economy, as well as being fully prepared to enter most Masters programmes and other areas of further study."

All students on the BASc will study core interdisciplinary skills and a foreign language, along with new modules, designed by leading academics. These new modules reflect cutting-edge research and aim to encourage students to link together their studies in arts and sciences, as well as exploring the differences between these disciplines. Students will also explore non-core 'pathways' mentored by a carefully selected member of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê academic community.

All students will be required to study a mix of arts and sciences throughout the degree programme and will also be offered the opportunity to study abroad for a year. There is also a work placement before the final year.

Professor Michael Worton, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Vice-Provost (International), said: "All Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê degree programmes require our students to think critically and creatively, to tackle ambitious projects and to develop the leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will stand them in excellent stead for their future lives and careers. Our innovative new Arts and Sciences degree programme embody this approach to undergraduate study. Requiring a mixture of breadth and depth, the programme offers choice, intellectual rigour and an excellent grounding in the knowledge and skills that students will need to fulfil their ambitions for the future."
