Four staff from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê have won more than £2 million in grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Professor Roger Matthews (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology), Professor Ada Rapoport-Albert (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Hebrew and Jewish Studies), Professor Robert Hazell (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Politcal Science), and Dr Nikolaos Gonis (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Greek and Latin) received the awards as part of the AHRC's Research Grants (Standard and Early Career) scheme.

Professor Matthews received £839,824 to fund a research project on 'Sedentism and Resource Management in the Neolithic of Western Iran'.

Professor Rapoport-Albert received £296,342 toward research on the 'Grammar of the Hasidic Hebrew Tale, 1864-1914'.

Professor Hazell received £505,954 to study 'The Politics of Judicial Independence in Britain's Changing Constitution'.

Dr Gonis received £851,035 for his research on the 'Oxyrhynchus Papyri', a group of ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts.

Each year the AHRC provides approximately £112 million to support research and postgraduate study in the arts and humanities, from languages and law, archaeology and English literature to design and creative and performing arts.Ìý

Nationally, 26 projects have secured funding in this round with more than £10 million being invested in research after a very competitive review process.

The majority of these projects average three years to undertake and most will commence in late 2010.
