On Thursday 2 October 2008, Professor Michael Worton, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Vice-Provost (Academic & International) received a delegation of Jiangsu regional university leaders, headed by the Director of Higher Education for the Jiangsu Province of China, Madam Wang Huang. The delegation was in the UK on a fact-finding trip, organised by the British Council, to learn more about the UK approach to curriculum design and employability of university students.

In a meeting chaired by Professor Xiao Guo (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Pro-Provost for China, Hong Kong and Macau), the Jiangsu delegation heard three presentations from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. Mr Dave Chapman, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Advances, described his work in developing a culture of entrepreneurship at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. Ms Saiyada Smith, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Careers, presented Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's comprehensive career service, particularly in respect of its support not only for international students but also the increasing number of UK students who want to work overseas.Ìý

Professor Nick Tyler, Head of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering, offered the recently completed review of the Engineering curriculum at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and explained how radical changes of approach to the subject have dramatically expanded the range and number of applications to the department, driven up results, and made Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Engineering students perhaps among the most employable in their field.

Jiangsu is located in the Yangtze River delta, on the east coast of China; the regional capital is Nanjing. Jiangsu covers a land area of some 102,600 square kilometres, and has a population of 76,245,000. The region is one of China's most prosperous, and boasts 121 universities and a student population of 1,568,800. Overall, universities in Jiangsu are consistently ranked second only to Beijing in national university league tables.
