The winners, in four categories, are:

• Experienced Staff - Dr Tim Beasley-Murray (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê School of Slavonic & East European Studies), Dr David Bender (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Medical Education), Dr Greg Campbell (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Biosciences), Dr Peter Delves (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Infection & Immunity), Dr John Eyre (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering), Dr Stephen Instone (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Greek & Latin), Dr Mark Lake (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology) and Dr Adam Wojcik (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Mechanical Engineering)

• Supporting Learning - Ms Judy Medrington (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Archaeology).

The awards celebrate excellence in teaching and serve to showcase the pedagogic expertise and leadership of our staff. They also demonstrate Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's commitment to continuous innovation in the teaching it offers its students.

A call for nominations from heads of departments and deans produced a strong field of applications: testament to the commitment and strengths of those nominated, as well as clear evidence of the quality of teaching at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.

Submissions were judged on the basis of the nominee's:

• contribution to curriculum innovation and development
• contribution to the wider student experience, such as the skills or internationalisation agendas
• contribution to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's strategic commitment to educate for 'global citizenship', social responsibility, leadership
• engagement in the development of interdisciplinary programmes
• innovation in support for learning
• development of the use of new technologies in teaching and learning.

Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost (Academic & International) and the chair of the selection panel, said: "The panel was enormously impressed by the quality of all the nominations for the inaugural Provost's Teaching Awards. The range of teaching activities involves the often highly original use of both traditional methods and new technologies, and the commitment to inspire and encourage students to achieve ever more in their learning is clear evidence of why Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê is renowned for the quality of its teaching. All the nominees and, of course, especially the award winners, deserve our warmest congratulations."

The awards panel comprised: Professor Worton; Professor Vince Emery, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Pro-Provost for South Asia & the Middle East; Professor Jane Dacre (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Medical Education); Bob Allan, Senior Tutor; Dr David Green (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Psychology & Language Sciences); and Brigitte Picot, Director of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Centre for the Advancement of Learning & Teaching. Winners will be formally recognised at an awards ceremony on 17 July 2008.
