New team of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Pro-Provosts appointed

As part of its developing International Strategy, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê has decided to create a new role of Pro-Provost for Africa. The first appointment to this position is Professor Volker Sommer (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Anthropology). His appointment will begin on 1 September 2008.

Four other new Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Pro-Provosts have been appointed; their appointments begin on 1 September 2008.

Professor Xiao Guo (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Chemistry) will be the Pro-Provost for China, Hong Kong & Macau, succeeding Professor Moira Yip, who has retired from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê this summer. However, Professor Yip will continue as a Special Advisor on China and give transitional support to Professor Guo.

Professor Mike Wilson (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Eastman Dental Institute) will be the new Pro-Provost for Europe, succeeding Professor Wendy Davies, who retired from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê earlier this year.

Professor C J Lim (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Bartlett School of Architecture) will be the new Pro-Provost for North America, succeeding Professor Jan Atkinson.

Professor Derek A Tocher (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Chemistry) will be the new Pro-Provost for East & South East Asia, succeeding Professor Philip Treleaven.

Professor Vince Emery (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Infection & Immunity) has been re-appointed to the position of Pro-Provost for South Asia & the Middle East.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's Pro-Provosts are appointed by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's President and Provost, Professor Malcolm Grant, to assist and advise Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê in developing strategic relationships with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's key stakeholders, both regionally and in the wider global context. In each case, the Pro-Provosts have a three-year term of office.

The Pro-Provosts report to Professor Michael Worton, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Vice-Provost (Academic & International).

Professor Worton will be organising an induction for the new team of Pro-Provosts in the early autumn and will make a presentation to a heads of department meeting on the updated International Strategy in the late autumn.
