NHS National Institute for Health Research

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê has had eleven researchers appointed to the post of senior investigator for the NHS National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê team help make up the first 100 members of the NIHR College of Senior Investigators.

The first 100 members of the NIHR College of Senior Investigators are drawn from researchers deemed to be making the most outstanding contribution to people-focused health research in the NHS. They will provide leadership to the NIHR Faculty, expert advice to the Director of the NIHR, and promote clinical and applied people-focused research in health and social care.

Sally Davies, Director General of Research and Development, Department of Health said: "We want to encourage the people who are leading applied health research in this country. Their work is crucial and already helping to shape the health and social care services of the future. At full strength we intend to have 200 senior investigators at any one time, and we will welcome more applications each year over the next five years."

The senior investigators from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê cover areas including neuroscience, cancer, infectious diseases, imaging and gastroenterology and hepatology. They are: Professor Martin Brown (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Neurology), Professor John Collinge (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Neurology), Professor Peter Ell (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Medicine), Professor Alastair Forbes (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Medicine), Professor David Linch (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Cancer Institute), Professor Anthony Moore (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Ophthalmology), Professor Deenan Pillay (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Infection & Immunity), Professor Martin Rossor (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Neurology), Professor Alan Thompson (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Neurology), Professor Adrian Thrasher (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Child Health) and Professor Nicholas Wood (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Institute of Neurology).

The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê members are all part of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre which was established by the Department of Health in April 2007 to translate pioneering scientific research into tangible treatments which will directly benefit patients. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê is one of only five of these centres in England.
