A panel discussion and debate on the future expansion of the European Union to the East took place at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê on 10 January 2006.

'The Expansion of the European Union to the East: Risks and Advantages of the Possible Enlargement to Turkey and the Ukraine and the changing role of Germany and the old Europe' attracted a wide audience from both the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê community and the wider public.

The speakers, who included the Turkish ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Mr Akin Alptuna and the Deputy Ambassador of Germany, Mr Hans Henning Blomeyer-Bartenstein, discussed Germany's position as one of the founding members of the EU at a time when the country is engaging in considerable public debate about the relative merits and risks of further EU expansion.
