Eminent cancer scientist joins Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê

8 April 2004

Professor Ian Jacobs - acknowledged as one of the UK's foremost academic gynaecological oncologists - has joined Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê Hospitals (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH) along with his 50-strong research team.

Professor Ian Jacobs

Professor Jacobs will transfer his research activities from St Bartholomew's Hospital. Current projects include the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening, a major long-term trial involving 200,000 participants nationwide and the studies of the genetic basis of gynaecological cancers.

His arrival also marks the establishment of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê's Department of Gynaecological Oncology, which is dedicated to the screening, prevention and treatment of ovarian cancers and other malignancies that are specific to women. Professor Jacobs will head the new department, in addition to creating an Institute of Woman's Health.

Professor Jacobs said: "I am attracted by the talent and expertise in the obstetric and gynaecological team at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH, the new hospital due to open early in 2005 and the superb academic opportunities available in the environment at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. The establishment of an Institute of Women's Health as a joint venture by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊH provides a unique opportunity to develop an international centre of excellence for clinical care, research and training in women's health."
