Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê awarded major Leverhulme Trust grant

11 November 2003

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê has been awarded a grant of £970,000 for an interdisciplinary programme of research in evidence science.

The project, 'Evidence, Inference and Enquiry', is being led by Professor Philip Dawid (Statistical Science). While the research will build on existing work in the interpretation of legal and forensic evidence, it will also involve researchers from up to 11 Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê departments who will explore the similarities and differences in their approaches to evidence. It is hoped the research programme will help to improve the use of evidence, inference and decision-making across a wide variety of academic and practical disciplines.

The funding was provided through a Leverhulme Trust Research Programme Grant. Owing to the high calibre of this year's applicants the award was divided between two institutions, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê being the major beneficiary. The grant, which was first introduced in 1995, awards up to £1.25 million each year for a programme of research, this year's award was further bolstered by the ESRC, bringing the total to £1,670,000.
