Aims:
You will explore the development of citizenship education. The module will briefly engage with historical and international realisations of citizenship education, however the prime focus will be an analysis of the development of citizenship education in England since 1997 and a wider education issue that is improved through the teaching of citizenship.
Outcomes:
You will:
- study areas such as; the history and development of citizenship education; the aims of the subject; the choices and challenges facing schools; the key concepts, skills and knowledge around citizenship education.
OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills) and the evaluation of citizenship education.
- Have the aims and ambitions for the subject critically analysed and compared to reality of the subject in schools.
- be encouraged to draw on your own experiences in reflection on how you have explored a key issue.
You will demonstrate this research and engagement by completing an assessment titled: Subjects in a Wider Context: The Development of Citizenship Education where you will write critically to consider citizenship education and its role to play in developing high quality learning experiences for children and young people that intersect with relevant areas of policy and practice.
