Description
Summary
This module will begin with the general principles of pharmacological treatment in children. The therapeutic alliance will be considered and how best to achieve patient compliance. There will be a discussion of key policies and procedures and resource implications. The major conditions in child and adolescent mental health that can be treated pharmacologically will be taught alongside a discussion of the strengths and limitations of medication as well as side effects and risk-benefits. There will then be a consideration of key new developments and how to critically appraise them.

After taking this module, you will be able to:
- Understand general principles of pharmacological treatment in children
- Understand the factors contributing to a therapeutic alliance when prescribing is part of therapy
- Understand the use of medication for the treatment of key disorders in child & adolescent mental health
- Understand how to critically appraise new developments and research
Who is this module for?
This is a core module for the MSc Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Sessions will include a mixture of lectures, seminars, research paper discussions and small group work.
