Description

Content:

This course delves into the intricate relationship between social identity, transport, and urban planning, specifically in the Global South. It investigates the interplay of various social factors such as class, gender, ethnicity, religion, race, age, and physical/mental ability in urban development. The module emphasizes the connection between spatial and social mobilities and their role in perpetuating both spatial and social inequalities in cities. It critically examines the impact of transport planning on social justice, exploring its interactions with other planning forms and the roles of the state, civil society, and the private sector in providing equitable transportation.

The second part, "Critical Perspectives on Urban Transport Planning and Collective Action" (sessions 5-9), critically assesses the methods and tools used in transport planning and their implications for transport equity. This section addresses a range of issues, including an overview of transport planning methodologies; the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD) and its contribution to socio-environmentally just cities; the effectiveness of smart cities in addressing transport needs; the spectrum of formal and informal urban transport systems; and the role of transport planning in fostering insurgent practices and political participation.
