The module aims to provide an understanding into the following areas of abdominal organ transplantation:
- Indications for transplant (kidney, pancreas, liver), including:
- Diagnosis options
- Suitability criteria
- Surgical techniques in multi-organ retrieval
- Surgical techniques in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation
- Pathways of allorecognition and effector response mechanisms, including:
- Why transplants fail: acute and chronic rejection
- Mechanisms to increase transplantation success, including:
- Peri-operative organ preservation, machine perfusion, bioengineered organ technology
- Bio-ethics in transplantation
- Immunosuppression and associated complications e.g. malignancy, viral infections etc
