Description

This module looks in detail at how a selection of novels engage in very different ways with the topic of violence, particularly in relation to nature. The module explores the problems of interpretation, how narrative technique may confound reader expectations and the ways in which perspective and affect is harnessed to manipulate response. Primary texts will be chosen from a variety of historical periods and cultures in order to consider how the novels respond to changing historical and cultural circumstances.

Novels for discussion vary, but have included Han Kang, The Vegetarian (2007), Octavia E. Butler, Dawn (1987), Tsitsi Dangarembga, This Mournable Body (2018), and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774).
