Description

The aim of this course is to study the history, culture, politics and political economy of Europe’s second-largest country: Ukraine. The course starts with the origins of Ukraine, explores the various attempts at state-building, traces the country’s changing borders during the twentieth century and covers events in post-Communist Ukraine up to the present day. Particular attention will be paid to the importance of Ukraine’s location between Russia and the West and to the complex historical interrelationship between Ukraine and Russia. We will explain Russia’s motives for invasion in 2014 and 2022 and Ukraine’s will to resist. The module will draw on a number of disciplines, particularly Political Science and History. There is no language requirement, but an expanded bibliography will be available to students with knowledge of Ukrainian and/or Russian.
