Description
This 15 credit module will develop the students' understanding of how the gut works, the role of the pancreas and gall bladder/bile salts, food digestion, the handling of xenobiotics. Structure and function of the liver including important metabolic pathways e.g. urea cycle, drug absorption, distribution and metabolism including basic pharmacokinetics will also be explored. Illustrations might include paracetamol overdose, the most common cause of acute liver failure, its consequences and treatment. For gastro-intestinal (GI) diseases we will cover malabsorption, inflammatory bowel disease, gastroenteritis, bowel cancer, acute liver failure, and cirrhosis. Various anatomical changes occur after the development of cirrhosis including portal hypertension, and oesophageal varices - how and why do such changes occur, what are the consequences and how do we treat them?
