Description

This module provides an introduction to the vast archaeology of one of the world’s great cities.Ìý Drawing primarily on the diverse expertise at the Institute of Archaeology (including members of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê East and Archaeology South East), the module will explore the Archaeology of London in its broadest sense.Ìý This will include the complexity of the deposition, construction and modification of the archaeology of the city – which goes back to hippos in Trafalgar Square over 100000 years ago and includes the epic daily impact of the Thames on its foreshores.Ìý The module will showcase the cutting-edge urban archaeology required to cope with this complexity, amongst the most exacting archaeology undertaken on the planet.Ìý It will also highlight the ground-breaking heritage initiatives with its many inhabitants and all their diverse backgrounds and needs.Ìý Finally, the module will review reconstructions of London’s development over time and will encourage comparisons with other great cities.

Being a global city, exploring London’s heritage needs a truly World Archaeology to appreciate its incredible diversity, an approach that is championed by the Institute of Archaeology.Ìý In terms of content, this module will consider Palaeolithic, Roman, Medieval, Industrial and modern London, will consider bioarchaeology, Maritime and Thames Foreshore archaeology, and architectural histories and will engage with radical heritage and public archaeology initiatives alongside more traditional museums.Ìý Field trips and site visits will be used to illustrate and explore issues.Ìý Students will explore the key online databases for London’s archaeology and will be encouraged to develop their own research ideas.
