Description
The aim of this module is to give students a broad introduction to common statistical ideas, techniques, models and tests, to develop a statistical literacy, and encourage students to think critically and challenge statistical findings when encountered.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- understand how to present numerical/statistical data clearly and meaningfully
- understand and appreciate the characteristics of different data types
- understand the assumptions underlying common statistical tests and methods
- perform exploratory analysis on data and propose appropriate tests in order to test hypotheses
- present statistical findings and clearly state the degree of confidence in these findings
- critically evaluate basic statistical reports and challenge assumptions
- appreciate the role of statistical methods in the context of quantitative research
- develop a foundation of statistical skills to enable students further their knowledge independently
