Description
This module is designed to help MSc students evaluate different ways of collecting evidence in human geography. The aim is to develop a questioning approach to existing norms of research practice and to come up with creative project designs that really deliver on our individual objectives. As we move through the module, we’ll question the essential acts involved in some of the most common human geography field methods. We’ll consider how and when to observe people, to take part in their activities, to talk with them or to look at the images they produce or the words they have written. In so doing, our basic premise is that field research is an adventure. It requires perseverance, inventiveness, and is as much craft as it is science. With that in mind, the assessment is based on a pilot study in which students test out a particular technique and show that they can learn from doing so. The idea is to provide useful food for thought for those who’ve some experience with these methods already whilst also giving those who are new to all this a decent overview in advance of their dissertations.
