Description
This module offers an introduction to Russian prose of the 19th and 20th centuries. A varied selection of texts are studied in chronological order, ranging from Aleksandr Pushkin's 'The Queen of Spades' to Liudmila Petrushevskaia's postmodern fiction. The module is intended as a foundation for the work on literature undertaken in later years. The emphasis is on close textual analysis, rather than contextualization. Those on the ab initio Russian-language modules will be studying these texts in English but with increasing reference to the Russian texts as the module progresses. Those entering the degree on the post A-level mode will be expected to read the texts in Russian. The module also contains a study skills element to help with essay writing and commentaries; as far as the latter is concerned, this takes the form of regular commentary classes during which the students will be asked to discuss short fragments from the set texts from a stylistic and formal point of view.Ìý
