Description

Module outline

This module covers developments in post-Soviet Russian domestic politics and society, with a focus on the formal structures and informal practices of governance at both national and sub-national levels. Topics covered range from executive and legislative politics to civil society and protest, from parties and elections to federalism and the rule of law. Students will engage critically with key academic texts and media coverage from both inside and outside Russia.

Module objectives

The module aims to equip students with the intellectual skills and knowledge to follow and interpret past, present, and future developments in Russian politics. Students will also gain the knowledge and tools to compare Russia’s recent experiences with those of other states, including through a sophisticated awareness of the methods used in comparative political science and sociological scholarship. Module participants will also be encouraged to develop especially detailed knowledge of a particular topic covered in the module, which will form the basis for their summative assessment essay (coursework).
