  1. Russian Poetry A (SERS0070)

Description

This module introduces students to the major poets and themes of the Russian poetic tradition, advances the ability to read in the original, and develops skills of critical analysis of poetic texts. To this end, it is based on a selection of texts from the 19th and 20th century, grouped under a series of broader or narrower thematic headings. The poems are chosen with a number of additional criteria in mind as well, such as accessibility in terms of language, variety (which may lead to the odd more difficult text), and links to other texts. The thematic headings provide material for one to three weeks, with on average three short poems per week. For contrast, three weeks are devoted to a detailed study of a longer work, Pushkin's controversial narrative poem Mednyi Vsadnik. Two module booklets containing all the poems studied on the course (apart from Pushkin's Mednyi Vsadnik), together with audio-recordings of the poems, are provided on Moodle.
