Description
This module is for doctors interested in minimally invasive surgical (MIS) skills training of all specialties (core trainees, registrars, consultants and surgical care practitioners). It will introduce MIS platforms (daVinci robotic systems and laparoscopic systems) and provide closely mentored hands on training. The module includes interactive lectures, video and hands on lab-based teaching for individuals, as well as interactive simulation based teaching for teams.
- Train the surgical team in the day-to-day safe and optimal use of MIS systems.
- Develop optimal basic robotic and laparoscopic surgical skills.
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOP) as a team to combat common problems encountered with the system.
- Train to recognise and deal with hazard scenarios as a team.
Learning outcomes:
- To understand the basic working elements of the robotic and laparoscopic platforms.
- To learn the basics of safe set up and use of the daVinci robotic system.
- To be competent in the correct technique for instrument use, handling, camera control, needle driving, suturing and dissection in virtual reality, dry and wet lab simulations.
- To understand the limitations of the technology.
- To be able to recognise system errors and faults and develop an SOP for trouble shooting.
- To be able to recognise surgical/anaesthetic emergencies and develop a protocol for emergency management.
- To develop a culture of maintaining quality assurance.
