Description

Summary

This course is a self-directed, distance learning module. This means that there is no face-to-face contact and all communications are undertaken via Moodle and email. You will explore normal development and functioning of the respiratory system in health and disease. The emphasis of this module is on the normal development, anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, including their application to some key respiratory conditions in their pathophysiology and presentation. This can guide assessment, examination and differential diagnosis. This module will not be focussing on the management of respiratory conditions, although much of the understanding gained from this module can be applied to the reasoning of treatment strategies. The aim is to provide you with a sound understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the respiratory system.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  1. Explain normal development and functioning of the respiratory system and apply this to the development of early respiratory disorders
  2. Describe the pathophysiology of commonly occurring respiratory conditions
  3. Differentiate between the key factors involved in major respiratory diseases
  4. Interpret modern ideas on lung and airway functioning
  5. Analyse the control of respiration, at rest and during exercise
  6. Examine the principles involved in maintaining adequate lung and airway function when these are threatened by disease

Who is this module for?

The course is suitable for qualified physiotherapists with a degree in physiotherapy at least equivalent to a lower second class Bachelor’s degree in the UK, or an equivalent sports physiology or medical qualification. It is also suitable for medical students.

The module is a core component of the Postgraduate cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy pathways at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê. You may also undertake the course as a discrete unit for CPD or, if assessed, you may use the 15 credits towards completion of the MSc or Diploma at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê.

Teaching and Learning Methods

E-learning capsules are interspersed with online individual or group activities that you are expected to undertake on relevant weeks. We also encourage you to use the online forums to interact with one another and the course tutors from the module starting up until the time of the exam.

Assessment

This module will be assessed by an unseen two-hour written exam.
