Description
This course provides the transferrable research skills to support students undertaking molecular biology projects (stream 1) or engineering projects (stream 2). The proposed module will have a common framework for all students covering: (A) literature review and presentations skills; (B) use of project-specific tools for the different streams; and (C) research statistics. The module will allow students to become proficient in the areas of reading journal articles and extracting key information; finding research papers and research data; using project-specific simulation or software tools; presenting research data using Powerpoint and posters; writing an abstract and; practical statistical analysis of research data.Stream 1 – the students will use online molecular biology tools for finding proteins and DNA sequences, using introductory online bioinformatics tools for manipulating such sequences; rationally designing genes and proteins; knowledge of expressing genes and purifying proteins; selecting appropriate microbial host strains for transgene expression
Stream 2 – the students will use bioprocess simulation, ProSim, Fluid flow simulations, Computational fluid dynamics, kinetic modelling, Matlab
