Description
This module consists of 25 sessions and workshops over the course of Year 1. Drawing on a range of examples from recent research being conducted within the academic department, module sessions provide training in and critical understanding of a range of research approaches and methods to collect quantitative and qualitative data. A unique element of the module is that sessions on methods are centred around and informed by real world placement activities where trainees plan, develop and utilise research tools to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Workshops focus on developing understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics and a working knowledge of SPSS to undertake these as well as straightforward approaches to qualitative data analysis. The module involves the development and carrying out of a research study with the help of a supervisor which is undertaken within an applied educational context. Curriculum: Range of Issues and/or Concepts to be Covered -The role of research in developing theory and how evidence-based/informed practice builds the professional knowledge base -The role of research in education -Worldviews, paradigms and varying perspectives on research -Different types of studies: strategic research, randomised control trials, Evaluation studies, action research, longitudinal studies; -Methods: questionnaires and surveys, systematic observation, structured and semi-structured interviewing, psychometric tests; -Planning and application of survey, observation and interview methods in real world contexts -Analysis: qualitative and quantitative, content analysis, thematic analysis, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, exploratory data analysis, parametric and non-parametric tests, tests of difference, correlational and regression models, principal components analysis -Using SPSS to enter, manage, explore and analyse data -Developing research activity: Critiquing and evaluating research; Developing research questions; Ethical considerations; Designing research studies; Conducting research; Project and data management; Data analysis; Presenting research, preparation of reports and research briefings for different audiences and purposes -Participating in funded research
