This Module is designed to give you an overview of current Research Governance relating to many aspects of research in the UK. It comprises three main sections; Ethics, Good Practices and Quality Control. Within these sections there is information on the governance surrounding research involving people, research involving animals, and good practice legislation relating to both. There is also information on the governance relating to study design, data (and data sharing), publishing, authorship and management of the risk of research misuse.

As existing or future students and employees in clinical or scientific settings, how do we ensure that our work is of the highest ethical and scientific standards and that we promote good practice in all our endeavours? The answer is simply understanding and employing the principles of Research Governance.

For a number of social and historical reasons, research has been increasingly regulated over the last few decades. The benefits of this seem obvious; including protecting vulnerable groups, reducing fraud and misconduct, and financial probity. However, there are also disadvantages, including time delays, constraints on freedom in research enterprise, and a lot of paperwork. But, understanding and employing the principles of Research Governance will reduce the disadvantages and ensure the you meet the highest possible standards in your work.
