Description

This module builds on earlier modules that introduce students to central ways of understanding and analysing different forms of educational practice, provision, policy and governance, and critical theoretical frameworks that enable reflection on the broader social purposes, values and significance of education.听听

This module will encourage students to step back from some familiar ways of thinking about what education is and its effects on society and individuals, in order to ask fundamental questions about what education should and can be. We will approach this through an exploration of some historical and contemporary experiments in radical education and critiques of the dominant model of state schooling.听听

Our exploration will involve an engagement with primary texts by proponents of radical educational approaches and theoretical work on central moral and political questions to do with the relationship between education and society, human flourishing, freedom, identity, responsibility, democracy and justice. The discussions throughout the module will focus on questions to do with the meaning and use of the terms 鈥渞adical鈥, 鈥渞adicalism鈥 and 鈥渞adical education鈥. A central aim of the module is to develop an awareness and understanding of the social, historical and political context of ideas about the purposes and meaning of education.听

Teaching delivery:鈥 This module is taught in 10 weekly meetings (with no distinct lecture versus seminar division). 鈥
