Description

The module is focused on developing students as agents of positive change for pupils, for their own development, and to impact on inequalities in the world, including social, economic and environment inequalities. To do so, we support students in identifying an opportunity for change in an education context familiar to them. We then work together to propose ways to start to address the issues and inequalities identified. In this way, we collaborate in developing clear ways forward in making a positive difference in education. Ìý

The module is taught through 10 weekly seminars (in addition to reading week). This includes dedicated time to work on the assessment elements with tutors.Ìý

We first develop an understanding of professional agency and what is involved in changing practice for the better, whatever your role is in education. We then engage critically with proposals in the literature for an ‘activist teaching profession’, achieved through collaboration to develop education professionals who are socially and politically engaged. The central role of research and evidence in making sustained changes in education is also recognised, as we draw on cutting edge research and real-world examples of positive change in education.Ìý

This module aims to give students the theoretical and practical tools they need to positively influence education and ‘make a difference’ as a professional.Ìý
