Description

In this compulsory module you will explore and deepen your understanding of a selected specialism subject from the Primary National Curriculum and its role in the education of young children. Additionally, you will link your specialism subject knowledge to practical work in school via a teacher/practitioner research project. This module is intended to support the preparation for becoming a Subject Lead later in your teaching career.Ìý

You will be asked initially to identify three preferred subjects from a set of up to 11 pre-determined subject specialisms, which reflect the primary curriculum. You will be allocated ONE of these selections.ÌýÌý

Across the academic year you will attend six Specialism Days, which will include:ÌýÌýÌý

  • critically examining the nature of the curriculum for primary children and explore factors that have influenced its origins, considering future directions for change.Ìý

  • increasing your awareness of current research, policy initiatives and developments in practice related to the Specialism subject.Ìý

  • extending your understanding of techniques of research and evaluation and the ways in which these can be used to support continuing professional development in school.Ìý

  • Whole class and group activities and possibly off-site visits e.g. to schools, galleries, museums etc supporting the theory-practice continuum.Ìý

In the context of a school research project, you will conduct a small-scale action research project, to help you analyse the range of opportunities for learning both in and outside the classroom and examine critically what is meant by effective teaching and learning. This will enhance your own professional practice in the subject.Ìý

This module is assessed in the form of a presentation (and viva) in line with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê and the PGCE Primary programme's commitment to diversify modes of assessment.Ìý
