Description

This first-year module introduces some of the fundamental preparatory practices vital for exceptional performance, and students will develop expressive and technical skills in voice and movement that will enhance their capabilities to respond in imaginative contexts. Students will focus on their own functioning while working together to explore the processes that allow the mind, voice and body to work in unison for expressive communication. There will be a focus on unlearning to encourage students to identify and release habitual body and speech patterns that will allow them to extend the range of their physical functioning.
The module introduces Feldenkrais’ favourable conditions for learning: slowing down, reducing effort, following curiosity, and resting. Emphasis is placed on students’ own discovery through an interaction with the challenges, demands, and opportunities that practice-based training provides. Students will be assessed continuously on their work during classes; by a short movement and vocal presentation; and by a reflective learning diary. The Creative Arts and Humanities Performance modules are designed to explore the fundamental use of the body and voice for communication, expression, and performance, and as such will support each student to connect with their bodies and learn ways to make sound and to move with greater efficiency and range. They are designed to work for all whether disabled or non-disabled.

Teaching delivery: Twice-weekly 3 hour morning training sessions during the ten weeks of the second term. An intensive week-long workshop will take place in term 3 prior to the final assessment. Students will follow a series of iterative exercises that build both skill and capacity for performance. Training will be punctuated by opportunities for reflective writing mid-way through and at the end of each session.ÌýÌýÌýÌý
