Description
Precision manufacturing is an emerging field in Advanced Manufacturing and the students upon completing the module will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of various aspects of precision manufacturing such as methodologies, machine tool requirements, consumer needs and applications as a part of Future manufacturing and Nanoscale Engineering. The module would also cover current practices in industries in terms of advanced machine tools for additive and subtractive manufacturing, software, production techniques, surface generation, quality and inspection, measurement methods and testing equipment (e.g. Coordinate Measuring Machine 鈥 CMM). The unique machine dynamics requirements for surface generation in precision manufacturing will also be discussed.

Aims of the module
This module will equip the students with an overall comprehensive knowledge and hands-on skills of the emerging precision manufacturing technology. As a part of case studies, the students will also be able to collaborate with local precision manufacturing industries to understand the challenges in the shop floor related to both additive and subtractive manufacturing and identify suitable solutions. The course will also provide opportunities to apply the knowledge the students gained from other modules of the program such as 鈥淎dvanced Characterisation Techniques鈥 in their project work.

Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Recognize the difference between precision manufacturing and macro-scale manufacturing.
- Evaluate product requirements and choose appropriate additive or subtractive manufacturing technique.
- Demonstrate hands-on skills in operating advanced manufacturing machine tools and characterization / metrology equipment.
- Design and fabricate solution as a team for a given manufacturing challenge scenario.
- Summarise and present technical contents.
