Description
In preparation for starting this module, students are strongly encouraged to attend a live trial to gain first-hand experience of the court environment. This module will then introduce students to a variety of crime scene investigative practices and techniques via lectures, workshops and practical sessions. On completing this module, students will - Understand the basic strategies of crime scene investigation and how to develop an appropriate strategy - Understand the theory behind searching a crime scene and how to identify potential exhibits - Be able to complete an Examination Report and Decision Log and package exhibits appropriately to maintain continuity and integrity - Be able to recover DNA, blood, and fingermarks within limited scenarios and understand the processes behind the analyses of these types of evidence - Be aware of the cognitive issues associated with crime scene investigation - Understand the basic approaches to giving oral evidence at court This material will be partly delivered by in-house and guest experts, including a half-day workshop with Bond Solon, the leading firm in training expert witnesses, and a lecture from a Metropolitan Police Officer. This lecture will round up the course by giving an example of all practices coming together in the investigation of high-profile crime and bomb explosion scenes, including the 7/7 London bombing. Students will then be assessed by putting into practice these principles underpinning crime scene investigation and expert testimony by examining a mock crime scene and providing oral testimony of that examination in a mock courtroom setting.
