Description

Summary

This module is designed for physiotherapists who wish to explore the principles of exercise and physical activity in cardiac disease prevention and rehabilitation, and how to apply these principles in design and delivery, using an evidence-based approach with a practical emphasis. Drawing on the evidence base, the aim of this module is to provide you with theoretical understanding and some practical experience in the specialist physiotherapy management of Cardiac patients and to provide the requisite knowledge to prescribe and deliver safe and effective exercise for individuals with cardiovascular disease.

This module is run in association with the British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR).

You will be encouraged to reflect critically on your own practice and scope of practice within the multidisciplinary team and will be expected to actively participate in discussions, debate and workshops.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

After taking this module, you should be able to:

  1. Understand and explain the physiological responses and adaptations of muscle to exercise and training.
  2. Apply clinical reasoning to problems with cardiac rehabilitation exercise programmes for patient with cardiac disease.
  3. Integrate and evaluate evidence in relation to the design of phase IV exercise programmes for cardiac disease patients.
  4. Evaluate problem scenarios in relation to exercise programmes for CVD patients.
  5. Implement emergency procedures for cardiac patients.
  6. Conducting motivational interviews with respect to exercise and other health behaviours.

Who is this module for?

This is an optional module for the Advanced Physiotherapy (MSc/PGDip/PGCert) and the Physiotherapy Studies (MSc/PGDip/PGCert).

Teaching and Learning Methods

The module will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face lectures, workshops and seminars. Teaching will be facilitated by relevant experts in their field. Online learning activities will be included before the course to support the face-to-face delivery.
