Description
This module examines key problems facing health policy in the UK and globally. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, using moral and political philosophy alongside political and economic analysis, to examine questions of social justice and health. The Covid-19 pandemic made clear the extent to which global interconnections affect all our health – and a key theme of the module is the interconnectedness of health in wealthy and resource poor states. The first half examines central questions about inequalities in health, wellbeing, and power and their causes, from the perspective of moral and political philosophy. The second half examines a selection of specific issues, which could include: climate change and health; emerging infectious diseases; drug resistant infections; intellectual property and drug development; the human right to health; philanthrocapitalism and funding of global health; migration of healthcare workers; ethical duties to provide healthcare to refugees; and research in resource poor settings.
