Description

Summary

The Neonatal Intensive Care module aims to enhance students’ knowledge base and critical appraisal skills to improve their care of critically ill and preterm neonates. It is aimed at those who will be working in both Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Local Neonatal Units.Ìý

Students will receive 5 days of face-to-face lectures/seminars and will be expected to supplement their learning through self-directed study.

Specific Module Content has been developed to align with the RCPCH Curriculum for Level 3 Training and the Special Interest Module in Neonatal Medicine.  It aims to achieve a balance between core principles of management, underlying physiology, current controversies and ongoing research in the following areas:Ìý

• Ventilation strategies for term and preterm infants

• Management options for PDA

• Inotropic support

• Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC): prevention and management

• Surgical conditions affecting the GI tractÌý

• Parenteral nutrition: indications and complications

• Neonatal encephalopathy and neuroprotection

• Preterm brain injury

• Long term outcomes of Neonatal Care

• Fetal medicine: the role of the NeonatologistÌý

• Ethical dilemmas in the Neonatal Unit

• Human factors and crisis resource management in neonatal resuscitation

Who is this module for?

This is one of the available core modules on the MSc Paediatrics and Child Health Intensive Care pathway, and an optional module for all other MSc Paediatrics and Child Health pathways.ÌýAny Level 7 students interested in taking this as an optional module, please contact the Module leader.

You will receive 5 days of in person lectures/workshops, supplemented through online learning.Ìý

This module will be assessed by the following:

  • Literature-researched, Critically Appraised Topic, with formative inputs from peers (70%)
  • Oral presentation (30%)
